Real-time protection is feature provided by Windows Defender in Windows 10 and 11. Disabling it permanently is not recommend, as it leaves your system vulnerable to security threats. However, there are valid reasons to disable it, such as runing a trusted program or to improve performance on old machines.
Here is the steps to do it:
- Press
Win + R
to open the Run dialog. - Type
gpedit.msc
and hit Enter. This will open the Local Group Policy Editor. - In the editor, navigator to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus > Real-Time Protection
- On the right side, find Turn off real-time protection and double-click on it.
- Set it to Enabled to disable real-time protection permanently.
- Click Apply and then OK.
- Close the Group Policy Editor and restart your computer.
